I have a star pattern that I found in Mailbox Magazine a few months ago. In the center is the title and author, and on each point of the star, there is a part of a story map (characters, setting, problem, main events, and solution). If you have the students and their parents read a short story about a superhero, they could then use the star to tell these parents these story parts. You could display this idea on a superhero cape or superhero shirt.
You could also use this star idea to have students create their own superhero.
--character traits/special powers
--problem to be solved
You might also use the star idea to teach a simple summary:
Somebody (name of the superhero)
wanted (what did the superhero wanted)
But (problem the superhero faces)
So (how the superhero solves the problem)
Then (how the story ended)
