Clip to ScrapBook
It was just three years ago that our district informed us that we can't use religion in the celebration at Christmas. One year we were even told not to say the word "Christmas". Parents really got upset that it had gone that
far. Our principal wouldn't let us use anything but "winter" in our newsletters, winter break, etc.

I do believe that everyone has the right to share their own religion and beliefs. However, I don't think saying the word Christmas is instilling in anyone the beliefs they need to follow --anymore than saying Hannakkah, etc.

In public schools (at least my system) does not
allow us to use any type of religious books, etc. One of my kids brought a book about Jesus at the beginning of the year when we were sharing our favorite books. I had spent a couple of weeks reading everyone's book. However, I told that student that I couldn't read hers--that she could bring another book. The parent didn't understand and complained--it got all the way to our district office. The DO indicated that I had done the right thing.

I can remember when I began teaching that we sang Christmas carols at Christmas, had Christmas programs--now our programs in December are not holiday related, etc.
