student is working grade level, then that's what you should tell
mom. I let parents know what the expectations of our district is. Those are different from district to district. I also show them examples of DRA reading books, "This is the level your child is reading at now. We want kids to be reading at this level." - I show the different books. I also show what the books look like at the end of the year. I let them know the # of sight words their child knows and how many they are expected to know. It will be good if you have everything documented and you can show/tell them where the child is. The same thing will apply in math, science and social studies.

Just show what your district expects and where the child is. I always recommend the parent have the child read. I suggest they go the library and check out the step into reading books. They will do better with spelling and writing the more the read. The kids become more fluent. I would have the mom recite nursery rhymes with the child in the car. Maybe even do the mom read a page, the child reads the same page just like mom to help build fluency. Mom can ask who, what, when, where questions also or just have the mom have the child retell the story in their own words.
