I also start the year with Eric Carle' Brown Bear, Brown Bear. We take time to learn about Eric Carle and make a class book. The first day of school I use my digital camera to take a picture of each student. I do not tell the children what I am going to use their picture for, and the next day I come in with a class book in which each child has their own page and the book follows the pattern - Sally, Sally who do you see?
I see Michael looking at me. Sally will have her picture on the page. Then turn the page for Michael's picture, etc. I also add my picture at the end with - "I see the whole class looking at me" with a class picture added. I have it bound and laminated and it is a class favorite the entire year! At the end of the year you can take the book apart and give each child their page from the first day of school. It is a great activity to start the year.
