A few ideas..........

Well, you could pull a Ron Clark and video tape yourself. The sub can just play that all day! (It might actually be really great, who knows? It's worth a try!)

More practical things I have done...............whoever
gets their name on the board will not have fun friday. Even if you dont do a fun friday, make one for them that week!

Or, have them work for an extra P.E. time or an extra recess!

If their name is on the board or has a check, or whatever "step" you determine, they lose ALL of their recess for the rest of the week and the next week. (Whatever you determine appropriate.)

Try
to arrange for a guest speaker or another campus support person that can come and teach a mini-lesson so it is someone the students are more familiar with. This is a little much, but possible to do.

This is what has worked the best in the past to help the sub get through the day. Make up some "bad" packets and arrange with some other teachers, of all grade levels, to have a misbehaving student go to their room when the sub determines they need to leave. I would write down the room #s and the # of students that teacher said she had room for. And then send a student with their packet to that room for the rest of the day. This helps your sub maintain a little more control and her sanity stays intact, which means she is more likely to return. The packets I do contain easy work, such as, first and second grade stuff, and then some easier grade level work. Or they can take a dictionary with them and start from the begining and copy it word for word. Or both!

I'm not above bribing with candy or a fun page either. It's kind of a "whatever it takes" approach.

If your students are really that bad and really running the subs out of the school, some of these ideas might work out great. I have more if you need other stuff.

I have taught at the two lowest socio-economic schools in our city which is top 10 or top 5 on the national poverty list. So, the ideas I have here are for dealing with some pretty bad issues and how to cope and remain sane.

My last class was inclusion, 33 students in a 4/5 combo. (I had some at a Kindergarten level, 1st, 2nd and 3rd............so they were all over the place with abilities, maturity and special services that they were provided with each day to support their education. Needless to say, this class was a mess!)---Suspensions galore and lots of discipline procedures, but the consistency and the expectations they had placed on them when they had a sub was very clear and they drastically improved each time they had a sub!

Hope this helps!
