Clip to ScrapBook
My students are fairly verbal (at around a 3 year old level), so we take in any opportunity for them to talk. I have found that puppets are a great tool. I purchased and have made many characters from favorite childrens books.
I read them stories and they re-tell them and act them out. I find that this is their most engaged part of the day. I have my room completely labeled. We do a lot of matching pictures and objects to words. I use a lot of language experience with my verbal students. They tell a story, I write it down, they read it back. Puzzles is an area generally these students excell in, so we have
many available for free-time. They each have visual schedules they use for their own worktime. I try to mix up their schedules so they have a hard task mixed with an easy task. Motivation is a huge factor for all students, but especially students on the spectrum. Koegel's have a a nice manual about motivation. I can't think of what it is called at this moment...I will look at my copy and get back to you. I also use a lot of social stories to teach routines. Carol Gray has some good books out on how to write them. Hope this helps.
