Autism
By Paige

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi!
I agree with the previous response. I teach middle school classes that include Life Skills and a couple of resource classes. A few of the high level autistic students are able to function well in academic settings.
As I learned in a conference once, act as though the students are from another planet or country and do not understand your language or customs (3rd Rock From the Sun is a good example). They do not read facial expressions or body language well. Pictures that include a person doing the task assigned helps them to understand what you are asking. Concepts are not something they grasp--visual
and concrete things are a must. A schedule that is posted will really help them. By saying "next you go to math" doesn't mean as much as seeing a list of their schedule.
I hope some of this helps.
