Communication
By Michelle

Clip to ScrapBook
While some simple signs may be appropriate, using sign language fluently will depend on use of the hands and arms. I mention this b/c you state he has some limitation in the use of his arms. I have a similar student, and
I use a combined approach including typical gestures, simple signs, picture communication symbols, and pointing/gesturing to desired objects. After approximately 10 months of training, he uses the following fluently:

Nods head for "yes", shakes head for "no"

Approximated signs: More, finished, eat/drink, bathroom(change me!), and thank you (only does this one for our school secretary

who thinks he is really cute!)

Picture communication signs: Symbols for all class centers, art materials, specific snacks, school environments. We are just beginning social phrases.

If your little guy has movement limitations, you will probably need some type of combined approach. I was really afraid this was going to be confusing for my little one, but he never had a problem with it.

Your best bet is to get one of the therapists to do an evaluation and help you figure out what to do. At that point, you can take over with implementing it. This is a necessary part of his IEP/Evaluation and you have the right, and the responsibility, to request it. I find that if they know I'll handle the implementation, they are usually more than willing to help me get started

Sounds like our kids are pretty similar. I have some web resources, but I'll have to get them organized before I can share them. I am currently putting them together for another teacher, so I'll be more than happy to pass the list along if you need it. Just e-mail me if you're interested.
