For our last writing one we had a kindergarten class come in and they each buddied up with a kindergartener and read them their books (I have first graders). They thought it was cool to be the "big kids".

Our last reading one was yesterday and we celebrated fluency...so they all sat in a circle and read one page of a Just Right book out loud to everyone (they had picked/practiced the day before)...It seems really simple but it was hands down one of the best moments of the year, so cool to see my kids (many came in as very low readers) all read a page of a book out loud. Then they got into small groups and took turns being the "storyteller" and read a few other pages to the rest of the group. Then we had a toast and donuts. Unfortunately, there is a Dunkin Donuts on my way to work and almost all reading/writing celebrations have involved donuts so far...a difficult precedent to put an end to! LOL
