My kids used the PVC pipe phones for years. A couple of years ago I used my school money to buy the plastic, hands-free kind. They work well once they get used to having them on their heads. They all look like rock stars with their phones on. They think it's cool and I think it really helps when they can hear directly what they are reading. You can't get too lound with them because the acoustics carry well from the mouth piece.
