I am a teacher's aide in a special education classroom. We have some problems with this too. We try to play games with one or two kids. Also, when we have breaks during the day, myself or the other aide will sit down and try to play a game or work on a puzzle and try to peak their interest with something they would like to do, or something that they are interested in. Say if your fourth grader likes to read, read him a story, ask him questions, ask somebody else that might be sitting close to you if they enjoyed hearing the story, and what their thoughts might be. Encourage socializing with another peer that seems to have the same interest as this child. It takes awhile to break down that wall but keep trying. Good Luck!!!
