K-8 Sped Classroom
By Judy

Clip to ScrapBook
I also teach in a K-8 sped classroom for the past 3 years. I love it!! I do however, have 3 aides that rotate through my classroom at various times during the day.

As far as organization - you can never be over prepared.
Get a schedule in place as soon as possible. I had mine made in the spring to be ready for the fall. I try to organize my room in various sections - reading, computer, desks, work table, daily living, job simulation, etc. I also use the 3-prong folders to organize my units for each of my classes. I then put the current folders into a plastic bin (w/lid) near the area where
I'll use it most often.

Classroom structure - try to gear your instruction for the most in a group as possible. After you have a group time then you can work with each student individually while the others are working on some type of seat work. I have tons of great resources on the internet to use with my students. Try the sites geared to kindergarten-2nd grade level.

Classroom management - I put up individual charts (I use the character/holiday shape notepads) with 25 dots on it. The students earn stickers for many different things: good behavior, good oral reading, participating in classroom projects, showing kidness to others, and many more. When their chart is full they can pick a prize from my prize box. We make a big deal about the student who gets to pick a prize, lots of congratulations!
