Cristina, Congrats on the job. I have just been hired as an ED teacher for 1st and 2nd graders. I too will have a small class (6 kids) and two aides. From the experience that I have my suggestions are to overplan, use
lots of behavior charts (the little ones you can get from any teacher store), and structure. I have found that maintaining structure through out the day will help the students as well as yourself manage despite any distractions that may come up. I have sometimes let ADD/ADHD students stand at their desk if needed. This helps them not feel so confined. If the students tend to start out
the day with problems at the morning recess talk with your principal and arrange for them to be the only ones let into the building and have them report to your room as soon as they arrive. They can still play and have fun but this way they are not starting off their day with trouble. I don't know if any of this will help, but feel free to e-mail me if you have any ideas or questions. I am always looking for new ideas. Good Luck!
