Subject-Predicate
By MaddieC

Clip to ScrapBook
Since "behind the tree" tells where the dog hid, I would think it was part of the predicate. It modifies the verb, not the noun.

I always thought a sentence had a subject-predicate format. If it wasn't part of the subject, it was part of the predicate.

Function: A prepositional phrase can act as either an adjective or an adverb by modifying a specific word.

During the summer months, they swam in the lake of many colors.

During the summer months is used as an adverb to modify swam.
in the lake is used as an adverb to modify swam.
of many colors is used as an adjective to modify lake.

In this rather complicated example the subject is they. The rest is the predicate.
