Montessori By PoohBear

I was an aide at a Montessori school for one year. I was working on my credential at the time and it was the only time I wasn't sure that I wanted to be a teacher. I can only speak for the one school and that was a preschool/kindergarten progam, it did not go into elementary ages. Perhaps others have had different experiences at different schools. I thought the "explore and discover" method of learning was wonderful for the preschoolers and not so great for the kindergartners. The class was completely child led and absolutely nothing was required of the students. If they didn't want to do math, | | they didn't do it. If they made one mark on a paper and wanted a new one, they got it. If they started a project and tired of it, they were allowed to throw it away. The theory was that all children are naturally curious and will want to learn all things so all you have to do is present concepts in an interesting way and the children will be engaged. This is true of some children but certainly not all and it seemed that many children were not getting a full and well rounded education. We've had a few Montessori students transfer into our school during the elementary grades and they were almost universally behind academically and did not understand classroom procedures.
