List Management
By Mrs. C

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach third grade and have had individual lists for about six years now. I love it and can't imagine going back to the traditional method!

Each week, I have a template printed out and placed on a clipboard or
in my lesson book, so it is always handy. As I come across words in a student's everyday writing (of any subject), I highlight it for them and write it on my template. Students are in charge of writing the words on their words to learn list. However, to help keep tabs on this, I have my own sheet with the words. Students choose five words from their words-to-learn list and five words
from our lesson of the week. They put their words on an index card and place in a pocket chart that I have hanging up for this task. I go through and check to make sure words are spelled correctly. If correct, I put a star in the corner and students may procede with the week's activities. If not, they need to correct and bring it back to me.

My students get explicit instruction on how to give the buddy check and buddy test to their study buddy. While they are giving the test, I walk around to manage and observe. If we have problems, we work out a fair consequence and that typically takes care of it.

Best of luck!
