    Reading Grades

Each grading period I tell the students they need to read at least one A.R. book and take the test for a grade. I assign this the first week, so that if they do not do well on their first try they can read a different book on their own and take another test to improve their independent reading grade.

Each grading period I read them at least one A.R. book as a read aloud. Then they take the test for me to count as a listening comprehension grade.

In guided reading the students usually answer comprehension questions for me or complete a graphic organizer on a weekly basis. I count this as a reading grade.

I model how to write a chapter summary early in the year. They never know when I will ask them for a chapter summary. I count this as a reading and a writing grade. I usually do this weekly. They know how to write a fiction and nonfiction summary, so I can even use this with science or social studies reading material.

I also take practiced reading fluency grades about every other week. I allow them a couple of days to practice reading a paragraph. Then I listen to them read it aloud for me and give them a fluency grade based on correct pronunciation, smoothness, speed and tonal inflection.
