When you find out...lemme know!!!

Kristy,

I, too, share this problem with a down syndrom student of mine...however if all he would ever call teacher's and students was "poopyhead" I would fall over dead from delight! This child constantly swears, his first
greating of the day is "Hi, b*****". He physically abuses me and his aid...and has even starting taking off his clothes to touch himself, and trying to touch us very inappropriately. If you find out an answer...lemme know!!!

While we have never been able to stop the swearing, we have been able to stop some behaviors, like his spitting in our faces. The behavior specialist says one

of the best methods to changing a behavior is modeling and extinction. When this child would spit on our face, we would calmly walk out of the room, have another teacher sit with him while we washed our faces. That actually worked. He quit doing that after a month. Once kids pick up on swearing or words like poopyhead though, its hard to break them of it. As is the case with our student, he hears that fithy language at home...its common place. Talk to the parents to see where he may have heard this language. Perhaps he needs not to be a situation where people talk that way to each other. Hopefully you all have a better relationship with the parents then our school does. If you want some more indepth idea's, suggestions, or just want to vent, please feel free to email me! I know what its like!!
