mainstreamed kids By Carolyn

AS a teacher who worked for three years with special education students, and low-achieving students who were not classified as special education students, I can vouch for the benefits of having children with academic difficulties/special| needs in regular education classes. I was hired to teach these types of children in a homogeneous setting. The sad end result was a group of children who basically fed off of each other. There were so many behavior problems all of the time. There were also no good role models for these children. I did end up sending my highest achievers back to the regular classroom. | | What a difference in both behavior and academic achievement for these children when they were in a heterogeneous, large group setting! Haven't studies shown that homogeneous grouping for any reason does not work?
