I taught 4th grade last year. One of the things that I used to do to just get them into writing was called "Quick Writes" . I would show them something but only for a few seconds...then they would have to write as much about it as they could. It would just get them used to writing descriptions of things. I would give them points for how many great words they used. From there we just took a prompt and brainstormed together for the first few times. I would write whatever they told me....soon they were more and more on their own.
