My favorite thing to do is ask the children if all three states of matter can be in one thing. Most of the children say no. After all, what can be a solid, a liquid, and a gas? Then I take a latex glove, I get it from the nurses office, and fill it with water, freeze it, then I bring it to school, cut off the glove and put it in a pot to simmer for awhile. The ice turns to water, then as it comes to a boil, the water turns to steam. The kids react to this differently, but most of all it's kind of a "I should have known that!" They already know water freezes, and they know water boils, they just hadn't put the science terms to it yet.
