Using leveled readers
By WebJunkie

Clip to ScrapBook
This is the way I'm using the leveled readers this year. I have a gallon size ziplock bag with labels that I pre-made on the front. The directions are:
Read the leveled reader
Read the Response to Literature prompt
and answer it in writing
Fill out the graphic organizer in the bag (thats usually a story map or a g/o comparing and contrasting the leved reader to the corresponding basal story)
It takes them about 2 days to do it and then I start guided reading groups- I call about 2 groups per day at about 20 minutes each to make sure they are filling out their stuff right and responding to literature
correctly. My parapro will listen to them read orally to have them practice fluency on the days where we can spare the minutes. So far this is working out well. I'm changing the leveled readers each week. At least thats my intention.

BTW.... the response to literature might be an easy prompt like "You just read about a boy who wrote to his childhood hero. Write about your childhood hero. How are you like the boy in the story? How are you different?"
