A couple times last year I also just wrote out letters right onto the background paper or some feature of it (once on a puffy white cloud--and another time I cut out leaf shapes and wrote the letters onto the leaf shapes using a ball and stick type lettering. Another thing, Walgreens and some craft stores are selling pre-cut letters that are also pre-pasted with a post-it note-type reuseable adhesive. They are thinner than regular pre-cut but you don't need tape, tacks, pins or staples. Some of them come with a glue stick so you can make them permanent if you want.
