It is unfortunate that mainstreaming special education students is not working out for you and your students. There are many examples of where mainstreaming special education students DOES work, and IEP programs that are| effective and properly implemented do help these children to achieve their highest potential. However, it takes collaboration, cooperation, a positive attitude towards all students involved, support from administration and parents, etc. to make it work. There are behavior and academic problems in ANY classroom, whether special education students are involved or not. Perhaps if you had an | | opportunity to visit classrooms where inclusion DOES work, you might have a different perspective. Naturally, every classroom, whether it involves special education students or not, will have its ups and downs, and it may not be fair to base your experiences this year on the whole "mainstreaming" picture. If your experiences have not been positive, then try taking a positive step towards looking at programs where mainstreaming does work, instead of forming a judgment so quickly. You also need to aggressive pursue better support from special ed teachers/adminstrators and parents. I'd love to hear from some teachers who have had some positive (and negative) experiences with inclusion
