Not all Sp ed teachers By Cathie

Well len, I can understand you are frustrated. However, I teach Sped and have taught from mild disabilitites to severe, BD, Ld, and MI. I have taught self-contained, resource, mainstreamed, and inclusion. I agree that not| all students need to be mainstreamed. I do resent YOU lumping all sped teachers into one catagory. Mainstreaming is not the sped teachers law. It is the governemnts law. We as sped teachers have to make the best decisions about where to place children as we can. I have a few Questions for You? Do you attend the IEP meetings for your children in your class? If not why not? What kind of classes | | do you teach? Health? Do your sped teachers try to help you in your modifications? Come to your class periodically to check on their children? Are they willing to work with you, offer help? If not this could be part of your problem. As far as punishing the behavior of sped children, they should not be allowed to disrupt your entire class, however if the behavior is a diagnosed part of the disability it makes discipline more touchy. I am not sure what state you teach in and I only know my state's regulations. I do feel for you, I know it is a hard job with the number of children you teach and then having the sped children. But please don't lump all sped children or teachers into one box. We are all different as are the children. Remember it is not the children fault they are placed in your class. It is supposed to be a committee decision. Attend the meetings and voice your opinion. It may help.
