I am a teacher's aide in Michigan. I work with severe emotional and mentally impaired children. I work with a teacher who has fantastic ideas for these kind of children. For behaviors (because our population of children our food oriented) we use this to help manage their behavior. We use a ticket system. When they come in the morning they have 12 stars up next to their name on the board. They also have a green ticket in the pouch. When they have a behavior (warning), we put a yellow ticket in front of their green ticket, and cross two off of their snack. If they continue, or if they swear or hit, we will walk up and give them a red ticket and cross off four more of the snacks. If the behavior continues they lose all of their snack, it is crossed of entirely and then they only get juice. If the behavior continues juice is also removed. We do alot of visual cards because they seem to need it. We have on the other side of the stars and their names a picture of snack, a picture of chocolate, or candy, and also a picture of recess. If their behavior continues where we cannot get them to manage their behavior, we take away chocolate, which we give them when they come back from lunch. We will then add 5 minute take off for recess. We will give them a chance to get back in control, or we take off 5 minutes, the next card is 10 minutes, or if we have to (we have had to do many times) we take the card off the board and they lose the whole 15 minutes. This has been a very effective system for us. We should have bought stock in Velcro!!! There is a wonderful site on the internet that is called Do2Learn. They have picture schedules set up. It is very informative and very helpful. We also use picture schedules to go through their whole day. A couple of years ago, the three of us, (two aides, and the teacher) went to a seminar called T.E.A.C.H. It is the best. Find out about it and see if you can go to this wonderful seminar in your area. Going back to the picture schedules, we have one little guy who has severe everything. When he comes in he has a picture schedule to go by. The first thing on his schedule is group, then calendar, then break, then I (independent work station) (taught at TEACH)then snack, etc. The children know what to do, because they see the pictures. We even have a picture card that say bathroom. There are programs for these picture cards. But you can get alot of them on that web site Do2Learn. Another thing about the snacks, we give them a choice of animal crackers, pretzels, or cheese crackers (Cheezits). Our program allows for us to get reimbursed for these snacks. I hope that I have helped you. Any more questions, let me know. You can e-mail me at lonertwo@hotmail.com
