remember the old days
By i teach k

Clip to ScrapBook
i have been at my school for 21 years and i remember back in the day when we got 3 STRIPS of staples and a few reams of paper that had to last you the entire year.so we would do back to back copying on a DITTO machine which
made it almost impossible to read. finally things began to improve for us financially and now we get:

$125 each year to order through a co-op (stuff is way cheap) plus all the copy paper we need. the children are given a supply list for stuff like crayons, markers, pencils, glue, etc....they bring that from home and parents replenish as needed.

consumable textbooks/workbooks
for every child

usually our parent booster club will spend around $200 per classroom each year for other stuff we would like but never have the money for (like lakeshore....)

4 computers in my classroom (although not every room is that lucky)

tv/vcr mounted to the wall in each classroom

overhead projector

listening center w 8 headphones

15 sick days / 3 personal days/ 1 professional day paid per year (and no, we don't have to find our own subs. i can't believe some of you have to do that...i think that's terrible!)

30min. + 10min of planning time each day and 30 min. uninterupted lunch each day

we still are lucky enough to have an art, gym and music teacher!

two copiers and a laminater for a staff of around 25-30

small class sizes. usually around 18-20 per room

now i post all of this and feel very lucky. but the thing is all of us "oldtimers" remember how it used to be in our building....but the new kids being hired have no idea how lucky they are and complain all the time!!!!! they should read some of your posts to know how good they have it! good luck to all of you this year. hopefully our government will begin to value education and put the money where it is needed the most:s)
