    How's this?

    Connection
Readers yesterday we started to talk about strategies we can use to stay with books even if some of the words are too tricky. One of the things that lots of you noticed I was doing is reading the pictures. Today I want to teach you that one way to stick with tricky books is to read the pictures.

    Teaching
Watch me as I read this book by just using the pictures. (Model slowly and carefully looking at pictures, noticing details, pointing out the most important pictures.) Did you notice how I read that book by just using the pictures? Did you notice how I looked for details in the pictures and tried to figure out which pictures were most important?

    Active Engagement
Now it’s your turn to try reading a book by just using the pictures. (Hold up the next page in the book I was reading.) Right now, turn and tell the person next to you what might be happening next in this story. Remember to look carefully at the picture and really take the time to notice the details. (Listen in and report.) Wow! You noticed so many things happening in this picture! That’s really going to help you read stories even when they have tricky words.

So anytime you’re reading and you come to lots of tricky words, you can use the pictures to really help you understand the story. Today I want you to try really looking carefully at pictures and noticing details. We’ll talk about what you noticed after reading time.

This blog really started to get me thinking about the minilessons I have planned for the beginning of the year - with RW it really seems that its not just what you're teaching, but how you're teaching it...
Since I haven't started school yet, I'm now going back and writing "scripts" like this for every minilesson for September. So BookMuncher, thanks for the great ideas and also for the extra work I just gave myself! LOL
