Pennies in a glass By g8rFan
|
| Have you ever heard of this? Fill a glass to the brim with water. Ask the kids how many pennies do they think you can drop in before the glass overflows. They will guess (usually) a low amount. Anyway, start dropping pennies in very slowly one at a time. I haven't done this in a while, but if memory serves, you can get about 70 pennies in before it spills! As you are doing this, the water will make a dome and the kids will notice this. The whole lesson is about cohesion and adhesion and after the experiment, you can talk about how the glass could hold so many pennies. If desired, start again, but this time after about 20 pennies, add a drop of dish soap and watch what happens. This is fun and easy. Hope this helps.
