Science Club By luv2skoolu

My situation was a little different b/c I volunteered to start a club and was given a supplemental contract, but it was a really fun club because children love science. I did it off and on for a total of five years (got burned out some years b/c I didn't know how to say to NO! to additional clubs, committes, workshops, etc.).
But anyways, I changed my grouping and meeting times every year depending on interest. Most of the students that showed interest were high achieving boys, but I would always try to convince students that are minorites in science (girls and African-Americans) to join. The first | | year I had 15 students and we met every week (wasn't bad, good kids who wanted to learn). Then I had about 20 kids that met every week. After that I had about 20-23 kids that met every other week. One year I had 30 kids total ( One group of 24 and a group of six), I switched off and met with the large group one week and the small group the other(crazy, but worthwhile), eventually I put both groups together though. The smaller group was a lower achieving students that wanted to participate ( that group was awesome!!). Then I went back to 20 or so students every other week.
I would usually start around Nov. and end in April or May (one year even in June, people call me crazy for that, but I LOVE teaching science!!). We would meet after school for about 45 mins.
Each year I would have a theme: Chemistry in Our World, The Human Body, Junk Box Wars, Mystery (Forensic Science)
I would use science activity books as resources. Only including activities that didn't have a lot of materials to set-up.
Here are some websites that I used pretty often:
sciencespot.net (EXCELLENT!!!)
chemistry.org/kids
discoveryschool.com
Right now, I'm debating if I want to start a club. I'm at a new school and everything is so crazy, but you've replanted the seed. We'll see!
