Every time I buy a book, it is covered before it goes on the shelf or in the basket. They are "loved" so much, and this really helps make them more durable. There are different kinds of clear contact paper. Make sure you're not getting the kind that's like shelf paper that is just kind of sticky, but won't seal permanently.
