I keep track of work completed (& marks) on a class list. When I collect homework (Homeworkopoly) I let them know the amount they have earned and they write it in. Surprisingly, there were no apparent attempts to add extra, although many asked for help at the beginning, to add in their new amount. We play homeworkopoly Tues. through Fri. morning first thing while also silent reading. I just call them up one at a time to hand in their homework and give them the number. Sometimes when life gets busy, I may have to add a couple of days together. During testing time and close to report cards, I sometimes just average the total of the assignments and give everyone a fair amount. Since I tend to be generous during times that are stressful to the students, no one has complained about these occassional bonuses:p. None of it takes very much time since I keep track of assignments and marks on paper as well as on the computer - I don't have access to a computer at school all the time, so I use the paper class list to record the marks then take those lists home and put the marks on my computer at my leisure. Hint: the lists at school come in handy to back up any comments / complaints from parents about why their darling only got a B instead of an A! I'm always surprised at how many parents don't understand the concept that I don't GIVE their kids marks - the kids have to do the work and EARN the marks! Sorry this turned out so long, but I hope it helps.
