I assign students a number according to ABC order and my grade book. I make magnets for each child but instead of name I use numbers that way they are reusable year after year. I have some dead space on the side of my filing cabinet and here I have also on magnets, choice one, choice two, cold lunch. Students place their magnet in the right place during morning time. I ask if there is any money to be collected and then I go over to the filing cabinet and record lunch count from there. You could also assign a helper to do this or make it a job if you have one for each student. Later in the year I let students fill our the lunch count form, but early on I do it.
