Flexible Grouping
By Jerri3

Clip to ScrapBook
By flexible grouping...I mean that we group our kids at the beginning of the year (according to state and national test scores, grades, teacher recommendations, etc...) into different level groups like low, average-low, average, average-high, and high. The students move up and down into different groups when skills are or are not mastered, so some students may move many times thoughout the year, while others may only move once or twice.

The teachers who have the lowest groups have very small groups---sometimes only 6-7 children. This allows constant one-on-one attention. It worked like a dream for us last year.

We only grouped for reading last year, but we are thinking about grouping for math, too.
