I don't mind if kids keep their own supplies (some like special pencils, erasers, etc...), as long as they don't interfere with class time. I don't, however, allow school boxes. They drive me nuts because they get dropped so often and then supplies go everywhere. They also take up too much room. Instead, we require a school bag (small zipper-type) to keep their personal supplies in.

If a child shows up with a box, I tell them that's a good item for them to keep home supplies in (for homework) and I have them take it back home. If Mom won't buy a bag (happened once - but I don't think it was rebellion as much as just forgetting) I just buy a cheap one for the child to use in class.
