Here are a few thoughts By Nichole

Hello! I will be a first year 3rd grade teacher this year and VERY much looking forward to it. I have been teaching 5th grade for the past 3 years and 1st grade before that. Here are some things I think will work really well in 3rd: 1) Research states that kids should get 10 minutes of homework per grade level. So for instance 3rd (3 x 10 minutes) is 30 minutes per night. 2) I plan on only giving LA and math HW from Mon-Thurs each week. ( I did this is 5th adn it works really well!) 3) My school has a 90 block for just LA. I think this amount of time is good, but not enough. I would suggest | | planning as much time on Reading and Writing as you can. 4) _Plan 1 full hour for math. 5) SS and Science, I switch these back in forth after the unit is done. I start the year with communities in SS and then go to habitats in science. It makes my planning a TON easier because I am only focusing on one content at a time. 6) Have HW Journals with the kids. I do this in a black and white composition journal. I use this also for notes back in forth with parents. It's easier for the kids to remember one thing back and forth then trying to have 2 or 3 things to bring back in forth daily. 7) HAVE FUN! It's a great grade! 8) Read a ton to your kids. This level LOVES all kinds of books from picutre books to chapter books!I hope these help. Nichole
