My experience...please read

Funny how we all have advanced kids. :) Must be a teacher thing. Anyhow, my son attended a college prepatory school (that I worked at) for 2 years ( K3 & k4) He was already very intelligent for his age and never took a nap
as a baby. His pediatrician said that he was surely gifted. He is. Well when my son entered K in a public school, we were called in to meet with his teacher and guidance counselor. We paid to privately have him tested and while I will not share his score, he was in the 99%tile He was way ahead of his peers and they started him in the 3rd grade math book the second week of K and could
read anything you put in front of him. They rec. sending him to the magnet schools in town for enrichment to develop talents OR allowing him to skip to first grade. My husband and I thought it over for 1 night and decided against it. Our reasons were:

1. He is already graduating when he is 17 years old.....we don't want it to be 16.

2. He is a boy. They mature slower than girls and we felt he would not appreciate not being able to drive until after all his friends. Socially, he would not be at an advantage. This was a HUGE factor for us.

3. We are in no hurry to "make him grow up"

He finished his K year having COMPLETED the 3rd grade math book. Won every award possible and had a fantastic school year. Not to mention he is a great kid. He loved helping his peers.

We stimulate our son by providing experiences and support. He is always going to be ahead and we are ok with it. When he gets into HS, he can take advanced classes and dual enroll.

We read, go to museums and science centers, play games and sudoku puzzles. We also watch movies, play with playdoh and dance to music.

I know as a parent, we made the right choice.

Hope that helps. (hearing from someone who went through it this year):s)
