Poppy Series
By Abbra

Clip to ScrapBook
I used the book Poppy with fourth graders in conjunction with a science unit on animals. We made a KWL chart on the Great Horned Owl and filled in the learned column with information we learned from the fiction book. Then
we went to non-fiction sources and collected more information.

I had giant notecards where we sorted the information into six categories: (Notes taken in phrases)
Type of animal and characteristics (eg. bird, mammal, reptile...)
Habitat (Description and map)
Physical description
Diet (Prey and Predator info also)
Reproduction
Other Interesting Facts

Then
we made an animal wheel. We started with a large circle which was traced from a large pizza pan. In the middle was a smaller circle traced from a cereal bowl. A picture of the owl was drawn (free hand ) in the smaller circle with background scenery so that the whole circle was filled. Then the picture was colored with colored pencils.

Outside the smaller cicle the rest of the pizza was divided into 6 pizza slices. We worked as a class to write a paragraph from each notecard to put into the different slices. Then each slice was decorated around the writing with appropriate scenery and colored in with colored pencil.

A bibliography was written on the back of the wheel.

After the class finished the sample- each child choose an animal to research. I had them use the website for NatureWorks
www.nhptv.org/NatureWorks/nw4.htm They had to take notes on notecards and make an animal wheel.

I had them do their projects on plastic coated freezer wrap because of its durability.

The next year when I read the book, the class did a sample wheel for a porcupine.
