involve parents By Bertie

Good advice from NCP and the others. For those rare out of control behavior issues our principal is willing to insist the parents come to get the child if the child was removed from class and the time out room didn't work.| She makes the phone call, and she requires someone always accessible by cell or phone. This is helpful in the situation I had recently where the parents were not doing anything to work with us on improving his behavior. After picking him up at least 5 times in September they were willing to come in and work with us on behavior modifications, supporting our discipline efforts with follow | | up at home, and by keeping in touch with us. They brought him into school just moments before the bell (he simply could not be outside with the other children) and picked him up at lunch. We kept him in the room till all children were gone to car or bus at home time, then they could get into the parking lot to get him home. Along with their support if he was disciplined, the daily face to face moments when dropping off and picking up made a big difference in developing his self control (though it didn't cure the root cause).
I just wanted to add that I had a student exactly as you describe (tantrums, spinning, yelling, no meds) and he graduated this year (special ed). He ran into me recently at a store, and told me that it has been hard work but he knew it was in his hands. And as he was leaving, he said "God Bless you" to me. Suddenly the whole wretched year with him was worth while. I hope that for you too NCteacher.
