how long do i wait?

I interviewed last Monday for a position in a district I love. I sent a thank you card and everything. I am now very curious as to whether they want me or not. Is it appropriate to call the principal who I interviewed with or is it too soon? How about an e-mail? How would you approach this? Is this a good sign that a week has gone by and they have not called? Would they call the unwanted people first right away? uggh... I am not sure as it has been a long time since I have had to deal with jobhunting.
I hope I don't sound like a freak.
