Pros and Cons
By Jerri3

Clip to ScrapBook
Interesting....
I have read both pros and cons on silent reading in the classroom. I only know what works for me and my kids, and I know that it works very well for me. I have received letters from past students in middle
and high school telling me that they will never forget the silent reading time in my class.

I love, love, love silent/independent reading time because:

1. It gives my students an opportunity to read material of their own choice.
2. The students learn how to figure out difficult words on their own.
3. There is no pressure to read faster or slower. NO EMBARRASSMENT!
4.
I just KNOW that my students become more and more motivated to read as the year goes by. I see it, hear it, and feel it! They end up begging me to make the silent reading time longer.
5. Parents tell me about the difference they see in their child's reading ability.

Reading becomes so much more enjoyable for students when they are allowed to choose what they want to read for a few mintues everyday. :)
