A quick thought (I do need to run an errand!).... A agree with you that the words "also" and "but" may not need rankings because they are could be more useful for comparing and/or contrasting the ranked words. In fact, our students could greatly improve in their communication (oral and written) by understanding how to use "also" and "but" (and their related words). For example a very simple sentence: "The flowers in my garden are pretty, but the flowers in my neighbor's garden are beautiful! However, you should see the flowers in grandmother's garden. They are exquisite!" Gotta run! Or, to be more intense...gotta JAM! :D LindaR
