I love this activity!

In my experience (and humble opinion) this is a very valuable activity and can be useful at any grade level. In our district, it's called "word ranking". One way we do it is to have the class brainstorm words for a category,
ie. weather words. They come up with as many words as they can. The words are listed on a board, then the class is divided into groups. (Depending on the grade level, and to keep the point of the activity, teachers can choose to omit some words from the sticky notes list.) Each group copies the words onto sticky notes, one word to a sticky. Then together the group ranks the words
from mildest to strongest by putting the sticky notes in order. Each group shares their rankings one at a time, and others can ask things like. "Why did you put tsunami above hurricane?" It does provoke a lot of thought and discussion about word nuances and word choice.
