I stand by my original suggestion

modified to say shelves to the ceiling! ;) I'm a nut for storage--I'd probably install one, two or three additional shelves all the way across there and put cute storage containers there. Or ordinary boxes and run a curtain
from the ceiling to the edge of the last shelf with boxes on it. If you are in one of those schools that do not allow fabric, just decorate the boxes yourself--or gift wrap them on the sides that show with a cute paper that matches your room. If you wanted to, you could even get some of those thumbtacks with the shorter pins and tack things to the outside of the boxes.

Depending
on how deep you made the shelves and the size of the boxes you chose, you could almost camoflague the space so that it
blended in with the other walls. Keep your containers/boxes all the same size and shape and it wouldn't look cluttered.

You could even leave a space between your existing shelf and the first storage shelf to decorate like you have in the past. You could use it to store seasonal items, decorations not in use, rotating units, etc.

I have a couple of those bigger storage boxes for posters and BB items that I have no idea where to store. Right now they are under an old desk that I intend to put a skirting around. I would love to have a shelf big enough to hold them.
