Clip to ScrapBook
I like to read the book, Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes. In the story, the little girl loves her name and is excited about going to school. When she gets there, a few little girls make fun of her name. She doesn't think
her name is perfect anymore and she doesn't want to go to school anymore. We talk about how we respect each other and how just one negative thing that someone says can make someone feel bad about themselves.
The text in the book is wonderful too. The verbs that tell what she does are fitting for her name. At first she "blooms" with excitement but then as they tease her, she begins
to "wilt".
I also like the book, The Teacher From the Black Lagoon. We discuss how my students may have felt not knowing their teacher(me) at first but then realize their teacher is not to be feared, which goes along with the book.
Have fun!
