Could you explain to your students that you can keep the boat if they help to keep it clean. It could be part of your jobs board. Then if the custodians see that the area is well kept/that you are using it to help students learn to keep things tidy, they might be more accepting. It doesn't hurt from time to time to let the custodian know that they don't have to clean that area OR set up a one-day-a-week cleaning schedule with the custodian. If they know they only have to "put up" with it once a week, they may see it in a different light. (I know that we shouldn't have to go through this, but if their attitudes won't change any time soon, then try to approach it with a "working together" kind of spirit.) GOOD LUCK!!!
