I sent one home about once a month. Maybe twice...
Friday was the day I would send it home because our school has a school-wide folder system in which all school-related newletters, PTA, fund raisers, little league stuff gets sent home goes home every Friday.
I do a lot of updates, reminders via e-mail (all my parents were available this way - So I could do e-mails). I also belong to Shutterfly (photo sharing) so parents are constantly "seeing" what we are doing in class.
My school sends one home once a week also.
