    I like it too, especially for early grades. In K or first grade, you could start with an really easy pattern like ABAB or ABB and get harder each month. If you have the squares cut already so the drawing would fit, and have them draw/color the item in order across the classroom as well, you'd be sure to have the right number of each item. Perhaps as a reward some children would be "lucky enough" to get to make the extras. Then I'd collect and sort them and each day have the class tell me what shape or color comes next. The bonus would be that as you discuss the upcoming month you'd introduce the holiday/seasonal symbols, and also the number of days in the month......all part of our math curriculum. If the energy for the activity waned (on your part or the kids) you could go back to the purchased calendar pieces, maybe after Easter.
