Assignment Book Game Plan
By JJ

Clip to ScrapBook
I have used homework assignment booklets for 7 years in 3rd and 4th grade since they've been mandatory at both of the schools I've worked at. I make an overhead transparency of an assignment book page and spend the first
two weeks teaching the students how to write down the assignments in their books. This pays off all year long!Homework assignments are always posted on one side of the front whiteboard and we all use the last 10 minutes of the day to write these down in the booklet. Parents sign the booklet each night confirming that they saw the child's work. Each morning students place the signed booklet
on the corner of their desk. I have students hold up each homework assignment and I quickly collect them. No paper held up, I collect the booklet instead for a quick note to the parent. After collecting work, I quickly stamp booklets with one of the Crayola design markers. No parent signature, no stamp. Each day is worth 2 points, 1 for doing the work, 1 for parent signature. I pay off at the end of the week for perfect scores with bonus bucks students can spend on small prizes once a month. Using this method with my 30 students takes less than 10 minutes, motivates, and serves as a great communication tool with parents. I also try to write positive notes to parents in the booklets whenever time permits. Hope this helps! JJ
