I worked there
By Katie4th

Clip to ScrapBook
I didn't have the best experience working there. I worked at one for about a year. Summer - School-year - Summer and then I quit. It all depends on the Directors. I didn't get along with them too well. The summer hours
were 10-1 and 4-7. Sometimes you could be scheduled for the 3 hour block, but sometimes only for 1-2 hours. I think my place was closed on Fridays and Saturday they were open 10-1 again. You had to come in early to get your materials ready and then stay a little later to put them away but once you were trained you didn't get the extra half hour pay. That aggravated me. I think the
starting rate was $12/hr. Then you get a raise after a certain amount of time and I had to ask for my raise when my time came.

Here's my biggest gripe. If kids cancelled, you lost hours. Each teacher would be scheduled to work with 2-3 children per hour. But if too many cancelled, they would pull teachers off the schedule and put the kids in other groups. There were days that I would get there and they would tell me that they only needed me for an hour. What a waste, especially with the price of gas. Other times, I would just get a phone call that they didn't need me. The thing that bothered me was that I was good at what I did. Parents would request me and everything. It was also frustrating because they played favorites. They would let some teachers work during both morning and afternoon hours and then cut other's hours.

As you can tell, not a great experience. AS for the job itself, you reteach skills to students in small groups. Each child has an individualized plan for instruction. They are working towards mastering certain skills that they are behind grade level in.

Hope this helps.
